“More than 142,500 Australians are on the waiting list for social housing, and half of those who were finally given a home in 2016-2017, were already homeless. For those who were homeless or at risk of homelessness, over half spent more than three months on the waiting list. For those not yet on the brink of homelessness, half spent more than two years on the waiting list. The need for social housing will only grow, from 1.3 million to 1.7 million households by 2025.”

I am going through the very same issue right now.
Suddenly became a single mother, never rented before, I have no rental references, and apparently most big real estate agwnta will not take child support as an income.
Therefore based on pension and the ftb only, I can only afford a rental place of $220 a week – based on the 30% of weekly income rule.
What kind of 2 bedroom, or even a 1 bed plus study can you find in the middle of the Gold Coast region for $220?!
You can’t.
I am stuck in a house owned by my ex fiancé, where every day is hurting my 3 yo daughter, as it is just not amicable anymore.
Yes the NRAS exists, but they are very few and far between with about 80 other applicants applying.
🙁
It is a tough gig, this single mother on a pension routine.
And the kicker is, I will be working as soon as I find a place to live, and would be easily able to afford rent then, but I can’t do it the other way around. I cannot start a new job all the way knowing that this massive emotional move is coming for my daughter and I.
