Name: Amanda Bulow
Position: Founder & Chairperson
Company: AWIC – Awesome Women in Construction
What do you enjoy the most, working in the field of construction & development?
Meeting new people, making lifelong friends, the support that comes from the industry, learning something new every day and the joy of bringing dreams to reality (building their first or family home).
Where do you see life in the next 5 years, what possibilities are ahead of you?
I’d like to be able to work within AWIC full-time. I currently work as a Sales Estimator and although I work at a great business, the team are wonderful and I enjoy what I do, my passion is with AWIC. AWIC has had some fabulous growth since it started in 2017, all while working for other building companies full-time. Having the opportunity to work on AWIC full-time would see the association grow from strength to strength and provide an opportunity to take it national!
If you could write a letter to a 13-year-old ‘you’ what would you say?
You won’t be in the cool group at school, at times you will feel that you don’t belong and you won’t graduate at the top of your class – but I want you to know that school is such a small part of your life. You won’t find your tribe for a while, but the wait is worth it. Believe in yourself as great things await you. Strength, determination, hard work and a never say die attitude is required and all of this is within you…you just have to tap into it. Your family will be your biggest supporters. Amazing leaders will be there to support you, although at the time you may not realise ‘how’. Many of these men and women will support you throughout your career. They will help, you just need to ask…you will also help them. The hard work will be worth it, I promise. You will find your place in this wonderful construction industry and you will shine.
What are 3 skills you have had to develop to get to where you are presently?
- Resilience – taking the hard hits and getting back up, having people tell you ‘you can’t do that’ but doing it anyway.
- Networking – attend as many events as you can with a pocket full of business cards, a strong handshake and eye contact during initial conversation.
- Belief – belief in me, what I know, who I know and where I can go.
